With God alone can I rest. We go into the new year with hope in God’s continued
faithfulness. Will we take time to reflect on the blessings of this past year having
witnessed God’s love? Every experience is proof of God’s unwavering presence in our
life. Of course, nothing is ever perfect, and we all have our ups and downs in this
journey we call life. Even on the darkest nights we can sing the Lord’s praise, for He is
always good to us. We pray and trust that God is making something beautiful of our life.
David wrote this psalm and finds his rest from the turmoil caused by enemies
(vv.1-4) He affirms his trust in God and calls us to trust Him too (vv. 5-10) And because
of who God is, we can (vv. 11-12.) Two of the most powerful verses in the entire Bible
are vv. 11-12. What a joy to know and learn by experience that God is strong and that
He is loving. Power belongs to God, who wields it with love and justice. It is a wonderful
psalm to pray throughout the year, for trust in God needs to be our mainstay.
We take inspiration from Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy
and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Hope is a powerful force that pushes us forward, even in difficult times. We trust the
Lord to fill our hearts with peace and joy and let that hope overflow to those around us.
Faith sees overwhelming danger as another opportunity for God to act. Remembering
what God has done for us, can increase our faith when we are caretaking or in any
situation.
If you are planning any New Year’s resolutions, I recommend following the
wisdom of Proverbs 12:25, “Worry weighs down the heart, but a kind word gives it joy.”
Let us try to be kind to ourselves and in turn to others. Another good reminder is
Exodus 14:13-14, “Moses answered the people, ‘Do not fear! Stand your ground and
see the victory the Lord will win for you today. For these Egyptians whom you see
today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you have only to keep still.”
Replace the word ‘Egyptians’ with whatever enemy you are facing now and trust that
God’s love will carry us each step of the way.
Only in God can our soul rest and certainly we deserve that rest. Let us thank
the Lord repeatedly this year for the gift of each day, for the power of prayer, for ability
to believe in ourselves and the grace to trust God each moment, knowing God hears,
holds and loves us unconditionally!
